Understanding Types of Care for Seniors: Part 2

There are so many different options available to seniors and their families that you could easily feel overwhelmed by the number of housing care types and styles of seniors’ communities. So where do you begin?

Here’s the second of a two-part series about the terminology and differences between available senior care solutions. You can find the first part here.

Alzheimer’s Care

There are numerous senior housing options for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s. At The GreenFields, we offer these services at GreenField Terrace.

With memory impaired, it is vital to ensure 24-hour support and structured activities to provide safety and quality of life for patients. Many families try to care for their loved ones at home. This can be extremely difficult given the skillset required to care for a person with an impaired memory.

GreenField Terrace offers memory care and enhanced assisted living in an environment that, we believe, is just like home.

GreenField Terrace consists of four separate houses which surround an enclosed courtyard, allowing residents to garden and enjoy the outdoors without risk of wandering. Three of the houses offer memory care assisted living for those with a primary diagnosis of dementia. In addition to the three memory care houses, the fourth house at GreenField Terrace offers an enhanced level of assisted living for people whose needs fall between traditional assisted living and skilled nursing.

Residents receive medical supervision, opportunities for specialized programs and activities, additional security measures, as well as emotional and spiritual support.

With only 12 rooms per house, more individualized attention is provided in a comfortable, less-structured environment. At GreenField Terrace, the focus is on the person, not a schedule.

Each house includes a fully-equipped kitchen where residents may help with meal preparation, if they choose, and a dining room. Amenities include a living room with a fireplace and library, a private sitting area, a beauty salon and barber shop, and outdoor patios with gardens.

Respite Care

Respite care provides a temporary break for caregivers by providing a resident with a short-term stay in a community, such as GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center, that can meet their needs.

At The GreenFields, respite care services are provided so that caregivers can take a much needed — and often necessary — break while knowing that their loved one is receiving the best care possible.

Usually, residents stay from between a few days to a month, depending on their situation. They receive all of the services of the community. Respite stays may also serve as a “get acquainted” period for the senior. Many residents find that they enjoy their stay and decide to move in soon after the short-term visit.
