Making the Transition to a Continuing Care Community

continuing care retirement communityThe term Continuing Care Communities refers to a facility or group of facilities that offers various levels of care either on one campus or in multiple locations. Generally, organizations offer some type of priority to move from one level of care to another as individual needs change. Ideally, residents of a Continuing Care Community will move in at the Independent Living level. At this point, they are still able to care for themselves. They are often just looking to downsize or enjoy their retirement instead of worrying about daily chores, home maintenance, etc. As they age and their needs progress, residents are then able to move along to assisted living, memory care, and/or skilled nursing, usually with a guarantee of placement.

When Should You Start Looking for a Continuing Care Community?

Many people think you should start looking for a Continuing Care Community when health or lifestyle make it necessary. In this situation, though, the advantage of choosing a Continuing Care Community that is preferred can be taken away due to a crisis and the resulting necessity of getting into the first one that becomes available. For this reason, it’s important to start searching early to get ahead of the curve and plan for the future.

In addition to being given priority access to other levels of care when needed, choosing to move to a Continuing Care Community offers much more than just another new home. Living in a community provides residents with a built-in social network of other residents. Some may enjoy on-campus amenities and meals, taking walks on the grounds, or making trips out for dinner or shopping. New friends are just steps away and will continue to be there as your needs change.

Some residents choose to move in before it’s critically necessary to do so. This can provide the benefit of being comfortable and familiar with the campus. Moving out of necessity, combined with an unfamiliar setting, can result in the individual being too cautious or worried. This may impact their ability to enjoy life to the fullest extent. If a person is already a member of the community before needing additional services, they can continue to enjoy their lifestyle and benefit from the extra attention and care needed on a short- or long-term basis.
