It was truly an honor to watch residents at The GreenFields Continuing Care Community present a check of over $10,000 to the WNY Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Too many of our residents are debilitated by dementia; at times, they may be almost unrecognizable to their loved ones and they have been unfairly robbed of their most cherished possessions – their memories.
With such a grim outlook, it can be hard to find hope. That’s why it’s so inspiring to know that a significant portion of the $10,000 was raised by the very people that Alzheimer’s has taken the most from – our residents and their families.
In fact, The GreenFields’ residents may join the campus as a couple, often in our independent living facility, but face circumstances that require one of them to seek more specialized services, including dementia and memory care. For many of our residents, the separation from their loved ones is almost unbearable. If it weren’t for the continuing care concept at The GreenFields, these residents would not have the opportunity to stay on campus together, only separated by the level of care that they receive. The residents that have loved ones in memory care share a special bond, traveling at least once a day by bus across campus to visit with their loved ones.
The residents at The GreenFields were an instrumental part in raising critically needed funds to support the local Alzheimer’s Association. They have taken adversity and turned it in to an opportunity to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s through their own stories, becoming an invaluable part of the mission to find a cure for a disease that has stolen so much from them.
