Linda Bennett, creator of “Blooms for Joy” program
Suburban Adult Services, Inc. (SASi) has chosen GreenField Terrace, the memory care and enhanced assisted living facility which is a part of The GreenFields Continuing Care Community in Lancaster as one of the recipients of their weekly flower donation program, called “Blooms for Joy.”
SASi is one of the leading non-profit health and human services agencies in Western New York providing the highest quality services to more than 10,000 seniors, adults, and children with special needs and their families. Linda Bennett, an employee with SASi, created the Blooms for Joy program, which she volunteers her time for, after watching a television feature on a New York City florist who created a similar program.
What exactly is the Blooms for Joy program? It is a project that collects flowers through donations from people or organizations who would otherwise be disposing of their used flower arrangements. Whether it’s collecting the centerpieces from a Country Club after a wedding or the flowers that grocers can no longer sell but still have a few good days left, Blooms for Joy allows its participants to collect these flowers, re-arrange them and re-distribute them to nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, Hospice and other places within the community to help bring joy to others. Through this program, participants are able to develop a variety of new skills and learn the importance of volunteering, in addition to spreading joy to those who receive the flowers.
GreenField Terrace is one of the recipients of the Blooms for Joy program. Since the program’s start in June, 2016, GreenField Terrace has received a weekly delivery of 20-24 vases, every Monday, from the participants of SASi’s Elma-based location. With each SASi location delivering to a different organization and on different days of the week, they are able to accomplish their mission of spreading joy throughout many different communities.
