According to a report published by Harvard Health Publications, the odds of being “very happy” rose 7% among those who volunteer monthly and 12% for people who volunteer every two-four weeks. 16% of the weekly volunteers felt very happy. This raise in happiness level is comparable to having an income of $75,000-$100,000 versus $20,000.
Volunteering has been proven to reduce:
Stress
Anger
Anxiety
Depression
Symptoms of chronic pain
Risk of heart disease
Odds of developing high blood pressure
Volunteering can be mentally stimulating and bring a sense of purpose too. With volunteering comes a sense of pride and accomplishment in what you do which in turn promotes self-confidence.
Thinking about a career change but not sure if you’ll like working in that particular field? Finding a volunteer opportunity in that area allows you to get a feel for what that job entails. Maybe you’re looking for some experience in a particular field to develop new skills or want to advance your career by building on skills you already have. Volunteering can present this opportunity as well. You will also be able to expand your network with those already in the field who you can learn from and connect and become friends with, as you will have common interests already.
Feeling connected to a community can also help you to create a support system, thus protecting against depression. Research has shown that being helpful towards others will bring you immense pleasure and satisfaction, and the social aspect improves psychological well-being and eases loneliness.
With up to 60% of nursing home residents nationwide not having regular visitors, volunteers at The GreenFields can truly make a difference in the lives of our residents.
At the GreenFields Continuing Care Community, we are just that- a community. Volunteering with us is similar to being in a small town. Soon, residents and staff alike will greet you by name and with a smile. We appreciate all that our volunteers do and could not be more thankful for them.
