On June 9, 2016, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Main Street in Buffalo, NY, through a grant from Lutheran Charities and the Lutheran Foundation of WNY, donated equipment to enhance GreenField Health and Rehabilitation Center’s Music & Memory program.
With a donation of 1 Hewlitt Packard laptop, 17 iPod touches, 2 Bluetooth stereo speakers, 17 noise blocking headphones with splitters, 2 charging stations, and 9 $50 iTunes gift cards, Holy Trinity has greatly increased resident access to music/memory therapy. This program allows for GreenField residents who are suffering from various forms of dementia to play music from their past which in turn boosts cognitive skills and reduces the need for certain medications. Research also shows that music improves the retrieval of stored memory, so when participants listen to music, they become more engaged with their surroundings, more social, and begin to remember more.
Having this new technology also allows for younger volunteers, such as members of Organic Youth, Holy Trinity LYO and confirmation classes, to establish relationships with GreenField residents by becoming valuable resources in programming this equipment, as they have grown up with this technology and are considered “tech-natives.”
If you would like to contribute to the enhancement of GreenFields Health & Rehabilitation Center’s Music and Memory program, you can send iTunes gift cards or checks made payable to The Niagara Lutheran Health Foundation at 5959 Broadway, Lancaster, NY 14086.
