The GreenFields Continuing Care Community | 20 Years of Caring
It seems hard to believe that this October the Niagara Lutheran Health System is celebrating the 20th anniversary of The GreenFields Continuing Care Community!
The Niagara Lutheran Health System began in 1956 as the Niagara Lutheran Home & Rehabilitation Center at 64 Hager Street on Buffalo’s East Side. In 1990, the organization began operating the Niagara Lutheran Delaware Home at 1040 Delaware Avenue, in addition to the Hager Street facility.
Development of The GreenFields campus started in the mid 1990’s, when Niagara Lutheran’s Board of Directors focused on developing a continuing care community where various levels of senior care would be provided on a single campus. January 1, 1996, marked the incorporation of the Niagara Lutheran Health System, with Jurgen Arndt as President/CEO. Later that year, the 52 acre Mang family farm on Broadway in Lancaster was purchased as the location for The GreenFields campus.
The first phase of the project was a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center, and on June 22, 1997, construction began. On October 2, 1998, 120 residents from the Niagara Lutheran Delaware Home were moved into their new home at GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center. The residents had breakfast in the old Niagara Lutheran Delaware Home, and lunch at in their new home at The GreenFields. The Niagara Lutheran Delaware Home was then closed.
This October 2nd the Niagara Lutheran Health System is celebrating 20 Years of Caring at GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center, and plans are underway to expand the facility to better meet the demand for our healing services.
The future of GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center
Our 2018 Leadership Council campaign will support projects such as the expansion of GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center with the conversion of 24 semi-private rooms to private rooms. In addition to experiencing an increase in the demand for our short-term rehabilitation and subacute care, we are also facing increased demand for private rooms. Currently, many of our rehab and subacute care rooms accommodate two patients each, but the great majority of our rehab patients want private rooms. In order to meet this consumer demand, we must now expand to offer more private rooms for such care.
The addition of private rooms at GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center will greatly improve resident and family satisfaction and enhance our competitiveness in the marketplace. In a study conducted by AARP, individuals over the age of 50 preferred a private room by a ratio of 20:1. Additional private rooms at GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center will provide the quiet, relaxing environment that is so conducive to healing for our rehabilitation residents.
The total cost of this expansion will be $4 million.
